Increased social awareness, rising costs and escalating need has resulted in increasing professional responsibility for people working with problem and pathological gamblers. Assessors and treating staff must document and substantiate their assessment process, referral options, intervention alternatives and treatment decisions. The Gambler Index (GI) helps meet these needs.

The Gambler Index (GI) incorporates the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5, 2013) Gambling Disorder diagnostic criteria in its Gambling Severity Scale. For background, the DSM-5 Gambling Disorder symptoms are augmented with gambling severity items. These DSM-5 symptom and severity items constitute or make-up the Gambling Severity Scale.
